Belgian dance mega-festival Tomorrowland will expand from two to three weekends in 2022 as the event tries to make up for the losses caused during the pandemic.
“The province of Antwerp has given us approval to host three Tomorrowland weekends in 2022, so only in 2022,” Tomorrowland’s representative Debby Wilmsen told the media. “All weekends will be in July, so we add an extra weekend ahead of our two traditional last weekends in July.”
Tomorrowland 2022 will now take place July 15-17, July 22-24 and July 29-31 in the Belgian cities of Boom and Rumst.
This three-week extension of the festival will only occur in 2022, as the company is trying to recover approximately 25m euros ($ 28m) in lost revenue. Both the 2020 and 2021 editions of the festival, which hosts hundreds of dance artists and 75,000 participants a day, were canceled due to the pandemic.
The cancellation of the events of 2021 was a particularly severe blow to the company. The cancellation came just two months before Tomorrowland 2021 launched, when local officials refused a permit to hold the two-weekend event, citing growing concerns about the Delta variant of COVID-19 and the complexity of logistics to ensure health and security checks for the crowd.
