Architect Stefano has explained to all people the story of how the idea of his project, the construction of a “vertical forest”, started, saying that: ”When I was a kid, I used to quote a novel written by an Italian writer, Italo Calvino, called ‘The Baron in the Trees’. It was the story of a young duke who decided, when he was 12, to abandon his family and spend the rest of his life living on the branch of a forest.”
Reading this novel and being even more fascinated by its history, the architect began to build the “Bosco Verticale” project in the city of Milan.
Bosco Verticale are high-rise residential buildings built in the center of Porta Nuova, Milan. In these buildings there are over 21,000 perennial trees and plants planted around the district, up to the top floors of the residence.
In these tall buildings live about 300 inhabitants.
The vegetation converts an average of 44,000 pounds of carbon each year, while mitigating noise pollution from the street-level traffic below. The two high-rises are entirely self-sufficient, using renewable energy from solar panels and filtered waste water to sustain the buildings’ plant life.
