Blinding Lights has spent 88 weeks ranking on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, beating the record held since 2014 by Imagine Dragons.
The record was previously held by the rock band Imagine Dragons, whose song Radioactive spent 87 weeks in the rankings between 2012 and 2014.
Taken from the album After Hours, Blinding Lights climbed the charts in early 2020 and spent four weeks in first place in April of that year.
88 consecutive weeks of Blinding Lights in the UK rankings, eight of them at number 1 means he is approaching Lewis Capaldi’s record of 100 consecutive weeks in the Top 100 for his ballad Someone You Loved. The Weeknd song still has a long way to go to break the Killers record of 280 consecutive weeks in the Top 100, however their song Mr Brightside, released in 2004, is currently in 79th place.
The Weeknd has thanked his fans on Instagram. “Great day for blinding lights,” he wrote. “Eternally grateful that I am able to experiment with sounds, try new things with my voice and create music with people I really love and respect. For the last decade, every song has been a journey and being able to continue this journey has been nothing short of a blessing. ”
His new song, Take My Breath, was released earlier this month, while two other songs – Save Your Tears with Ariana Grande and You Right with Doja Cat – are currently in the Top 20 in the US. A new album is expected later this year.
