The Grammy Awards have been the focus of media attention and criticism in recent years with many award-nominated artists. Many singers have boycotted the ceremony from time to time, such as The Weeknd who did not attend after his album “After Hours” was not nominated in any category. This year rapper Drake is the one who has pulled off his two nominations for the upcoming 2022 Grammy Awards. The rapper was nominated for best rap album “Certified Lover Boy” and best rap performance on the song “Way 2 Sexy”.
Drake was one of five artists in each of the categories in which he was nominated. The media reports that he will not be replaced in any of the categories and the remaining four artists will now continue the race for each of the awards.
The Grammys are considered the most prestigious awards in the music industry and are voted on by members of the Recording Academy, an elite organization made up of performers, producers and audio engineers.
Last year, he criticized the Grammys for excluding The Weeknd from the list of nominees. In 2019, Drake refused to perform at the ceremony and then criticized the awards show from the stage. That year, he won Best Rap Song for “God’s Plan,” but his microphone was cut off during the acceptance speech.
But not only that. Drake has also expressed disappointment with Grammy Awards and the Academy of Recording before. In 2017, after he bypassed the Grammy Awards, he criticized the Recording Academy for nominating “Hotline Bling” in the rap categories, despite insisting that his hit was a pop song. He also said, “We are conditioned to think that this is the true price for our achievements.”
Grammy nominations are chosen by members of the Registration Academy and voted on by them. Jazz musician Jon Batiste topped the nominations this year with 11 nominations, followed by Justin Bieber, Doja Cat and H.E.R. The winners will be announced at a ceremony in Los Angeles which will be held on January 31st.
