Actor Will Smith apologized for the slap in the face he gave to comedian and presenter Chris Rock during the 2022 Oscars. In his statement he wrote: “Violence in all its forms is poisonous and destructive. My behavior at the Oscars last night was unacceptable and unforgivable. “Jokes on my back are part of the job, but a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me and I reacted emotionally,” he said, referring to his wife, actress Jada Pinkett Smith.
I want to apologize publicly, Chris. I went off the line and made a mistake. I am ashamed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. “There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.”
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences condemned his conduct and said it has officially launched an official investigation into the incident and will investigate further actions and consequences in accordance with bylaws, standards of conduct and California law.
Smith also apologized to “the Academy, the show’s producers, everyone in attendance and everyone who attended.”
“I want to apologize to the Williams family and the ‘King Richard’ family. “I’m very sorry that my behavior has tarnished what would otherwise have been a wonderful journey for all of us.”
